The Heathy Way To Prevent & Control Allergy Coughs

Our immune systems act like a safety net against many illnesses and health disorders. Sometimes, however, certain substances such as dust, pollen, animal fur etc. can act as irritants and make our immune systems respond with certain symptoms. This causes allergies and allergic reactions which could be anything including sneezing, coughing, rashes and so on.

Allergy coughs can be extremely frustrating and hamper your day by making you cough continuously. Looking at this from the point of Ayurveda, sometimes allergic tendencies are inherited. Sometimes, a person’s current state of the balance or imbalance of doshas also determines how his/her body reacts to substances in the environment.

In addition, Ayurveda considers a strong agni or digestive fire as one of the most important factors in determining your health. When our agni is strong, our body will be more capable of absorbing the most useful nutrients in nature and eliminate what we do not need. It will also ensure that allergic reactions are not severe. However, a weak agni leaves one susceptible to illness and disease.

Here are some ways in which you can strengthen your body’s agniand eventually make your immune system more resistant to allergic coughs:

  1. Meditate at least once daily: It has been scientifically proven that the stress hormone, cortisol, if produced in large quantities, can significantly harm your health. Meditation calms both the body and the mind, and when practiced regularly, has been proven to make the body more resilient to environmental changes. It improves our ability to take in nourishment from our surroundings instead of viewing them as threats. All you need to do is take a break from the crazily paced lifestyle you have, sit by yourself for about half an hour, close your eyes, free your mind from all thoughts and breathe.
  2. Practice deep breathing: While it is tough to completely be protected from any allergy-causing substance (most of the time only the symptoms can be eased), we can definitely protect ourselves from getting in contact with them. Since most allergens are air-borne, we can inculcate deep breathing techniques that control our breath and overtime reduce the chances of breathing in these allergens.
  3. Try a natural soothing drink: Lemon has anti-allergic properties. Take a glass of lukewarm water, squeeze half a lemon in it, add a teaspoon of honey, and mix. Have this drink on an empty stomach for a natural remedy for your allergy coughs.
