Looking For An Ayurvedic Remedy For Cough? Read These Useful Tips

With the changing season, one needs to be careful of viral infections that cause stuffy nose, cough and cold amongst other symptoms. The children and the elderly are more likely to get sick when the seasons change.   • Turmeric tea: Having turmeric tea is an effective way to soothe a cough. The antibacterial properties of turmeric can be beneficial for improving persistent cough. While turmeric milk is a popular way to increase your turmeric intake, you can also sip turmeric tea. To make turmeric tea at home, boil 2 to 3 cups of water and add 1 teaspoon of turmeric. Strain the tea and sip the warm tea. 
  • Tulsi tea: Drinking tulsi tea every day can soothe throat soreness and irritation. The immunomodulatory (the immunity-enhancing) properties of Tulsi provide relief from respiratory infections. To make tulsi tea, add water and a few tulsi leaves. Allow them to boil together for 10 minutes. Leave the boiled water covered for 5 minutes. Strain the leaves and drink it.  
  • Ginger tea: Active ingredients in ginger can relax the muscles in your throat, reducing coughing. You can make a cup of soothing ginger tea by boiling fresh ginger slices with water. Allow ginger to steep for a few minutes before drinking. You can also add fresh ginger slices to your regular tea. 
  • Keep yourself hydrated: Avoid drinking cold water. Drinking liquids at room temperature can help alleviate cough, runny nose, and sneezing. Besides water, you can also have warm liquids like chicken soup and vegetable soup.  
  • Gargle with saltwater: This simple remedy is one of the most effective ways to get relief. Salt water reduces phlegm and mucus in the back of the throat and thus reduces coughing. You can gargle with salt water several times a day. Avoid giving salt water to younger children as they may not be able to gargle properly. 
  • Honey: Honey is a time-honoured way to soothe a sore throat. Two teaspoons of honey at bedtime can reduce nighttime coughing and improve sleep.
